Pfizer has announced that it will spend half a billion dollars in constructing state-of-art gene therapy manufacturing facility in Stanford. Currently 650 employees are working in Sanford facility, the new gene-therapy facility would add 300 more jobs.
The facility at Sanford is also involved in the manufacturing vaccine components including Prevnar 13 and other vaccines which are in the pipeline.
Pfizer is expecting to increase its ability to produce and provide gene-therapies for rare diseases around the world. The gene-therapies will use custom-made recombinant adeno-associated virus vectors.
Pfizer has already invested in North Carolina. In Kit Creek facility, scientists are working on a scale from 2L flask to 250L bioreactors.
